Off The Record Syrah, South Africa, 2023
The fourth vintage of Off The Record Syrah comes from two exceptional parcels: high-altitude vineyards on the Ceres Plateau (1,000 m) and Elgin Valley, both planted in fertile Bokkeveld shale soils. With only 3,860 bottles produced, this small-batch Syrah was 90% whole-bunch fermented and matured 9 months in 4th-fill French oak, preserving the purity of the fruit. In the glass, it shows a deep red hue with aromas of white pepper, violets, red and black berries, and a hint of garrigue. The palate is juicy and savory, with dark fruit, fine tannins, subtle salinity, and cool-climate elegance. Youthful yet refined, it’s a Syrah with finesse, depth, and excellent aging potential, earning 93 points from Tim Atkin MW.
